County Council election results

The results of yesterday’s Somerset County Council elections are as follows:

Conservative 35

Green Party 2

Independent 3

Labour 3

Liberal Democrat 12

The Liberal Party 0

UK Independence Party 0

The results mean that the Conservative Group has an overall majority of 15 seats.

More than 400,000 people were eligible to vote for the 230 candidates standing for the 55 seats.

Following the election, the successful candidates officially take up office on the 8 May which is the same day that the existing councillors officially stand down from their role.

The Full Council Annual General meeting on 24 May will appoint the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Council, the Leader of the Council and the membership of the various Council committees.

As the current Leader has not been re-elected, the current deputy leader, Councillor David Hall, will assume the responsibilities of the leader until Full Council on 24 May.

Immediately after the Full Council Meeting it is expected that the new Leader of the Council will confirm appointments to Cabinet roles.
